Low- & No-Prep Activities to Have in Your Pocket for Whenever You Need Them - BNT Team Meeting [S7 EP. 292]

Listen to the full episode below:

Spring break has us in that rare moment where we can finally breathe, and honestly, we needed it. In this episode, we’re talking through what it looks like to bring a little more ease and joy back into our classrooms when everything feels heavy. Time keeps moving no matter what’s happening around us, and as educators, we still have to show up the next day ready to teach, manage needs, and hold it all together.

So instead of trying to do more, we’re taking a different approach: hitting pause in small ways and bringing what we’re calling “grandma hobbies” into the classroom. Think simple, hands-on, low-prep activities that get kids creating, talking, and using their hands again.

We walk through a bunch of practical ideas that have been game changers for engagement and classroom management. From playing cards to Legos and Magna-Tiles, we talk about how these simple tools can completely shift student energy. We also get into embroidery floss for friendship bracelets, cross-stitching and felt sewing for steady, calming focus, and even using small figurines for blocking in theater or creative writing prompts.

What ties it all together is the idea that students often do better when their hands are busy, their brains are engaged, and the pressure to “perform perfectly” is lowered. These activities build stamina, reduce frustration, and make it easier for students to stick with something instead of checking out!
