Get ready because we are about to completely nerd out on today’s topic of inquiry! Inquiry is something we’ve talked about at length for many reasons. We both have different reasons why we got here, and you may even relate to one of our stories. If you know you’re using some great strategies but don’t really know the reasoning behind it, we get you. If you get good evaluations in every area other than questioning, we also get you.
It isn’t easy for students to ask and answer higher level questions and unless we provide modeling and explicit teaching we can’t expect them to do so. That’s where essential questions come in and is something you should be incorporating into your lessons. There is one caveat that may sound surprising, but in order to use essential questions you don’t need to be discussing a novel.
