The end of April always feels like everything is happening at once. I’m in the middle of dress rehearsals for Guys and Dolls, and with multiple performances stacked back-to-back, I found myself thinking a lot about what it actually takes to pull something like this off with 80+ students. Somewhere between cue lines and costume changes, I started noticing a bigger pattern I couldn’t ignore: the way students are approaching work, responsibility, and attention to detail feels very different than it used to.
What I’ve been seeing is almost a split. Some students are so hyper-focused on details that they miss the bigger picture entirely, while others are so disconnected from the details that they miss the work altogether. It shows up in academic assignments, rehearsals, and even basic task completion.
That contrast got me thinking about how much has changed over time. Years ago, missed work often came with immediate consequences and a lot more ownership from students. Now, with constant reminders and more flexible policies, I’m seeing more negotiation, more “I didn’t see it,” and more waiting for someone else to prompt the next step.
This led me to a bigger question: if this is what we’re seeing in front of us, what actually helps students build real responsibility and follow-through? In this episode, I walk through a few intentional shifts I’ve been making in my classroom. These are things that challenge my instincts as a teacher, but have been changing the way students show up, think through their work, and take ownership of it!
