The 3 C's of Behavior Management [S4 E94]

Listen to the full episode below:

Welcome to the second solo episode in a row with me, Marie! In episode 92, Unpopular Opinions: Teacher Editing Part 2, Amanda and I talked about how we wanted to hear more from you and other listeners of our Brave New Teaching Community so that we can deliver content that will be most helpful to you! So, I put out a question box on Instagram asking for specific topics that you wanted to hear.

I got a bunch of responses (thank you!) and about 20% of the responses were centered around classroom management and behavior management. I was a little surprised, because that’s not a topic I’ve really thought to cover, so we’re diving in today!

Do I have all of the tried and true every single trick in the book down? Uh, absolutely not! Do I have days that are harder than others? Yeah, because I’m a real life teacher just like you. However, I do have some strategies that keep classroom management manageable and sustainable.

These are strategies that I’ve learned over the years and have woven into my instructional practice and interactions with students. Specifically, I’m sharing my three C’s of behavior management - clear expectations, constant reminders, and consistency.

As you probably already know, effective classroom management definitely starts with building relationships, but it can’t stop there. Building relationships with your students is definitely not the only thing to focus on and it won’t magically keep behavior issues from coming up.

If you have a topic that you’d like us to cover on an upcoming episode of Brave New Teaching, send us a message on Instagram @bravenewteaching. We would love to hear from you!

Topics Covered:

  • A brief summary of my teaching background and why I will never leave the classroom

  • How to not take it personally when a student acts up

  • The important role that relationship building plays in classroom management

  • My explanation of the three C’s of behavior management with specific examples of how I implement them
