In today’s episode, we had the wonderful opportunity to interview Iris Crankfield: teacher, mom, and seriously fabulous all-around human.

Iris has just completed her 22nd year of teaching. She is the AP Capstone Team Lead and has taught every grade, 9-12, at every level. Last year, Iris taught Honors English 10 (on and off for 15 years) AP Capstone Seminar (5 years , and AP Lang (10 years). She student taught at the high school where she works, and stayed; it was her high school rival.

Iris attended Bowie State University for undergrad (BS in English, minor in British Literature) and the University of Maryland Baltimore County for my MAE. She is a National Board Certified Teacher, advises a variety of clubs from the National English Honor Society to the Banana Awareness Association. She is an AP Grader for AP Seminar and has done that job for four years.

Iris was a Teacher of the Year Finalist in 2015, and though she lost, she was the first Black teacher to make it that far in the district (still, there are no Black winners yet). Iris is the only Black classroom teacher in her school. She is a single mom of two boys, one college junior and one college freshman. On the side, Iris writes curriculum for multiple courses and is currently writing a devotional for teachers with strategies and scriptures to aide in approachable ethical, rigorous, culturally relevant, ABAR, edgeless, teaching.
